Part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Cement/Black. Black Cement is the 9060 stripped to structure. The shoe already borrows its bones from the 99x running family, the line that started with the 990 in 1982 and ran through the 991, 992, 993 and their revisions, then exaggerates the panelling and the midsole until the references stop being polite. Setting that shape in black with a cement grey means you read the geometry rather than the colour, every seam and every layer of the side wall visible as line work. New Balance spent decades being the brand people bought because it was sensible, so a version this severe is the archive being used as a design language rather than as nostalgia.
Utility
Black with cement grey is the most versatile way to own a shoe this large. First recipe: black wide leg trousers, a grey hoodie and a black bomber, a monochrome fit where the shoe supplies all the texture. Construction
Layered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays in black and cement grey, blocked so the greys sit against the black at different depths and the block N reads as a cut shape rather than a badge. The midsole is the stacked wavy platform with visible ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips. That is a softer and lighter approach than the ENCAP polyurethane rim and EVA core under the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive, which suits a shoe designed for city hours. Black hides scuffing on the upper but the grey midsole shows dirt at the sidewall first.
