Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 March 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Black/Light Cream/Faded Spruce. Faded Spruce is a colour with weather in it: a muted, greyed green that looks like a tree line in low light rather than anything from a team kit. On a Dunk High, that matters. The high cut version of the Dunk is the more assertive of the two, with a padded collar that sits above the ankle and gives the shoe presence rather than ease. Nike's whole visual language came from a graphic design student's Swoosh, first used in June 1971 and registered as a trademark in January 1974, and the Dunk High is one of the silhouettes where that mark is largest and most legible. Faded Spruce lets the shape talk while the colour stays quiet.
Two builds. First, earth on earth: brown or tobacco cords, an ecru heavy tee, a waxed or olive jacket, so the spruce sits inside a natural palette. Second, the sharper cut: black straight leg jeans, a white shirt worn loose, a black bomber, letting the green be the only colour on you. High tops want a trouser hem that stops just above the collar or a properly stacked crop, because a long break hides the shoe and ruins the proportion. Best for autumn and cold dry days. Dunks fit true with a narrowish forefoot. Brush suede in one direction when dry, avoid soaking the padded collar, and let them dry at room temperature rather than near heat.
The Dunk moved from court to street the way most Nike silhouettes did, through a decade in which Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress and then reappeared across 1990s and 2000s casual wear. Nike's voice through that period came from Wieden and Kennedy, whose Just Do It line, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, was named one of the top five ad slogans of the twentieth century and sits in the Smithsonian. Muted colourways like this one are aimed at people who came to that culture late and want the silhouette without the shouting. It is a Dunk for a wardrobe, not for a queue.
Style code DQ7679 002 places it in Nike's 002 range, the greyed and neutral family, which fits the faded reading of the colour. The Dunk High is a panelled upper over a cupsole with a padded ankle collar and a foam tongue, so the fit depends on how you lace the top eyelets: pulled tight, the collar supports the ankle, left loose, the shoe slouches, which is how most people actually wear it. The Swoosh is a full length overlay across the midfoot and is doing structural work, holding the panels together, not just marking the brand. A desaturated green shows scuffs as pale patches rather than dark ones, so keep the panels brushed.
