Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 19 July 2012 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Fire Red/Black-Cement Grey colourway. Red Cement takes a basketball reference, the cement grey speckle associated with the Air Jordan line Nike built after signing Michael Jordan in 1984, and puts it on a skate shoe. That cross wiring is the point. Supreme worked as a skate shop first, and Nike SB was the division created to serve skaters after they had already adopted the Dunk for its flat sole and cheap price. Putting one house's most recognisable pattern on the other's most contested silhouette is a very New York move: taking a status symbol from one scene and handing it to another. The Premium tier signals the material upgrade that makes the reference land properly rather than reading as a print.
First: loose fit black or grey denim stacked over the toe with a plain hooded sweat, so the cement speckle reads as texture rather than as a logo and the red does the shouting. Second: cargo trousers with a plain white tee and a red accent repeated once, in a cap or a jacket lining, which keeps a strong colourway from taking over. Good for skating, weekends and evenings. SB lasts are slightly narrow through the toe, so try true to size. Protect suede before first wear, dry brush after each one, use an eraser block on scuffs and keep it out of rain, since water marking on a patterned panel is far more visible than on plain leather.
Nike SB is where the company learned how to work inside a subculture rather than over it, an education it got publicly: its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology on 27 June 2005, and its unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution had already ended in a lawsuit and pulled ads in March 1988. Working with shops and scenes that skaters actually respected was the correction. The result belongs to the longer story in which Nike's shoes, from Air Jordans to Air Force 1s to Dunks, became status markers in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward.
The SB chassis underneath is built to be skated: a thick padded tongue to spread lace pressure through flip tricks, extra foam in the collar, and a Zoom Air unit under the heel for landings, sealed pressurised Nike Air being the cushioning principle the brand has built midsoles around since it made the technology visible with the 1987 Air Max. The Premium designation shows in the upper, where the cement pattern is carried in the material and paired with leather and suede panels rather than applied as a surface graphic. Flat court rubber with a forefoot pivot circle handles board feel. Patterned panels are unforgiving of scuffing, since damage interrupts the print rather than just the colour.
