Released on 4 April 2024 and part of the Hot Step 2 line. This release has a leather upper in Total Orange/Chrome/University Gold. Total Orange is the Hot Step 2 with the volume turned all the way up. Where the black version asks you to read the silhouette, this one makes sure you cannot look at anything else: a single saturated orange across a heavily built high top with a lugged outsole, which is a lot of shoe to render in one loud colour. That is the correct instinct for a sub label release. Nike learned in the late 1980s that a product line built around a figure works when it commits fully, from the 1984 Michael Jordan signing onwards, and NOCTA applies the same logic in a different discipline: pick a shape nobody else is making and refuse to soften it.
One loud thing is enough. Recipe one: black cargo trousers with a wide leg stacked over the collar, a black hoodie, a black coat, so the orange is the only colour anywhere. Recipe two: grey sweatpants and a cream heavy tee, which softens it enough for daytime without diluting the shoe. Cold weather, city and night, and it will not work with anything patterned. Give it wide legs rather than slim ones because of the bulk. Fit true to size with the collar laced properly. Clean the lugged outsole regularly because it traps grit, wipe the upper rather than soaking it, and store away from sunlight to protect the orange.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models becoming staples of mainstream American youth dress before reappearing in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Music has been the most volatile part of that relationship. Nike's unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution ended in a lawsuit from Apple Records and the ads being pulled in March 1988, and Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a public apology. A musician led sub label is the settled, collaborative version of that history.
A high cut silhouette with a substantial upper and an aggressively treaded outsole, the lug pattern that separates the Hot Step from every other basketball adjacent shape Nike makes. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole and the company's cushioning platform since the 1987 Air Max made it a visible design feature, sits underneath. In Total Orange every seam, panel edge and outsole lug is legible, which is the opposite of the black version and much less forgiving of scuffs. This is a heavy shoe with a tall collar, so expect a break in and expect it to sit high under a hem. A saturated orange will fade if the pair lives in sunlight.
