Released on 10 October 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudtilt line. This release has a mesh upper in Dark Sand. This is the Cloudtilt taken out of the running aisle and handed to LOEWE, and Dark Sand is the version that keeps the conversation low. On's own story is engineering: Zurich, 2010, Olivier Bernhard cutting garden hose to prove that a hollow shape could cushion on landing and firm up for take off, with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti building the company around the result. The Cloudtilt is the softest, most wearable expression of that, a shape designed for hours rather than intervals. Putting a fashion house's eye on it changes the reading rather than the mechanism. In Dark Sand the women's pair goes almost entirely tonal, a warm neutral that lets the pod structure carry the design load without a single loud element.
Dark Sand is a wardrobe neutral, so use it as one. Recipe one, tonal warm: a sand cotton trouser, a bone knit tank, an ecru overshirt, thin socks in the same family so the leg line runs unbroken. Recipe two, contrast down: black wide leg trousers, a white shirt, and the sand shoe as the only soft note at the floor. This is a lifestyle silhouette, built for walking, travel and long days upright rather than training. Size true and expect a close midfoot. Treat it like suede coloured fabric even where it is not: spray before first wear, brush dry dirt out rather than scrubbing it in, keep the pod cavities clear, and never put it near direct heat to dry.
On's own verified collaboration history is short and unusual: The Roger, made with Roger Federer, who became a shareholder in November 2019 before the shoe launched in July 2020. The brand's other partnerships are athletic rather than creative, the On Athletics Club under Dathan Ritzenhein, triathletes, and a tennis roster including Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca from March 2023. So a fashion house co sign on a Cloudtilt is a genuine departure, and the interest is in what it confirms: On is now read as a design object, a Swiss engineered shoe people wear because it looks engineered. Dark Sand is that idea delivered quietly, for someone who does not need the shoe to introduce itself.
The base is On's house system, CloudTec, which is best understood as structural rather than material: foam engineered into pods with cavities so the sole compresses in more than one direction, absorbing impact while supporting the foot across the width of the stride. On the Cloudtilt that tuning favours all day comfort over propulsion. Dark Sand is a warm mid neutral, which is generous with dust and less generous with rain marks, so a protector spray is worth it on day one. Beyond what the pair itself states, do not assume exotic materials here. On designs in Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, and the sole geometry, not the upper, is the engineering claim.
