Nike SB exists because skateboarding did not want a corporation that already held roughly half the US athletic shoe market by 1980, and the line had to build trust through shops, riders and small runs. It got that relationship wrong in public at least once, appropriating Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a 2005 tour flyer, drawing a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and issuing an apology on 27 June 2005 before settling out of court. What survived is the shoes. A leather upper on the mid-height Blazer pattern with a padded collar and tongue, reinforced through the areas a board actually contacts, over a vulcanised-feel outsole tuned for grip and board feel rather than for cushioning depth. Zoom cushioning in the name points at Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole that the company has used since 1987 to turn impact protection into a design feature, applied here under the foot where landings happen. Style code 864349 marks it. Summit White leather is the least forgiving surface Nike sells, so this shoe looks perfect for about a week and then starts telling the truth about how you use it.
