Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 January 2020 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/Siren Red/White colourway. Siren Red is a warning colour by name, and red on an Air Jordan 1 carries more history than any other tone the model wears. Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and the line that followed became a business of its own, marketed through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon films and eventually a separate brand entirely. Red was the colour at the centre of the noise, the one that made the shoe unmistakable on a court and later on a pavement. This is the low cut in a women's fit, which takes that loaded colour and puts it in the most wearable version of the silhouette, below the ankle and easy to live with.
Red is a full stop, so keep the rest quiet. First recipe: indigo or mid wash denim with a plain white tee, the most reliable background for a red shoe and the one that lets the panelling read clearly. Second: all black, black trousers and a black knit, so the red becomes the only colour anywhere and the outfit hangs off it. Avoid pairing with other strong colours, which turns the fit into a competition. This is a women's sizing low cut and runs close to true with a narrow toe box. Condition coloured leather occasionally to prevent cracking at flex points, clean the midsole separately, and keep them out of heavy rain.
The most repeated Air Jordan story is wrong. The NBA did not ban the Air Jordan 1: the shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, and Nike paid the fines rather than pull the product, then built a campaign around the argument. The myth persists because red and black basketball shoes became genuine status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion through the 1980s and after, and a good origin legend travels faster than a correction. What is true is more interesting: Nike understood early that controversy was a marketing asset and used it deliberately.
A low cut Air Jordan 1 is a genuinely different shoe to wear than the high. Losing the padded collar makes it lighter, more flexible and immediately comfortable, with none of the break in period a high top demands, and it sits under a trouser hem instead of competing with it. The upper keeps the panelled construction that defines the model, separate toe, eyestay, heel and Swoosh pieces, which is why Siren Red reads as distinct blocks against the base rather than as a single field of colour. Red leather is easier to maintain than pale colours but harder to touch up, so scuffs on the coloured panels are more permanent than they would be on white.
