Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 2 November 2019 as part of the Yeezy 500 line. This release has a mesh upper in Soft Vision/Soft Vision/Soft Vision. The 500 arrived in December 2017 and broke the pattern the line had set. Where the 350 was a knit sock and the 750 was a high top, the 500 was low, heavy and deliberately awkward, a shoe built to look like it had been dug out of a decade nobody wanted back. Soft Vision pushes that further by leaving the terrain palette behind. Instead of Oxford Tan or Moonrock you get a muted mauve pink, a colour that reads as dusty and slightly synthetic rather than mineral. That was the point of the 500 series: it let the label test tones that its earth toned reputation could not carry. On this silhouette the pink sits quietly, because the shape is bulky enough to absorb a colour that would look loud on anything slimmer.
Utility
Soft Vision needs one strong anchor and nothing competing. First recipe: straight leg raw denim in a mid indigo, a plain grey crew sweatshirt, white socks visible at the ankle. The pink then reads intentional rather than accidental. Second recipe: full charcoal, a heavy jogger and a matching zip hoodie, letting the mauve be the only colour in the outfit. Occasion: casual daytime, long walking days, city travel. This is not a running shoe despite the shape. Fit runs slightly large in length for many people and firm across the toe box early on. Care matters more than usual with a pale pink: brush suede-look panels dry, never soak them, use a light protectant spray before first wear and keep them off wet red mud.
Influence
Yeezy is the line that made the sneaker drop a mainstream cultural event, and by the 500 era the machinery around it was enormous: limited releases, queues, bots and a resale market that priced shoes like assets. The partnership was generating roughly two billion dollars a year for adidas at its height, and Forbes called the commercial arc one of the great retail stories of the century in 2020. The 500 mattered inside that because it proved the appetite was for the design language, not just the 350 shape. adidas ended the partnership on 25 October 2022 after Kanye West made antisemitic public remarks the company called unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, so this belongs to a closed chapter.
Construction
The 500 is built as a layered runner rather than a one piece, which is exactly what makes it feel dense underfoot compared with the sock fit models. adidas Yeezy footwear leaned on Boost, the expanded pellet foam that gave the 350 and 750 their bounce and their speckled look, and the 500 family sits in the cushioned end of the line accordingly. Soft Vision is applied across the whole shoe including the sole, which is what stops the bulk from looking like separate blocks stacked together. There is no visible logo, so the recognition comes from the profile alone. Expect a wide, stable platform, a snug fit at the heel and a break in period before the upper relaxes.
