Released on 7 November 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Cerulean/Bright Spruce/Peach Cream/White. Nike's racing programme is the reason the modern running shoe looks the way it does. ZoomX, the company's altered Pebax foam, is the lightest and most responsive material in its range, and the Vaporfly that launched in 2017 paired it with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step, with peer research finding marathon improvements of up to 4.2 percent. That programme created a second tier of shoes: the fast trainers that let ordinary runners live near race feel without racing every day. The Zoom Fly 5 belongs there. In cerulean and white it looks like a summer track meet rather than a marathon start line, which suits a shoe you are supposed to wear on Tuesdays.
Session one: tempo runs and progression efforts, where the rockered midsole rewards you for holding pace instead of drifting. Session two: race day for anything from ten kilometres to a half marathon if you want propulsion without race shoe fragility. Do not make it your recovery shoe, since firm fast midsoles are unforgiving on tired legs. Wear it with short socks that clear the collar, because fast trainer collars sit low and rub above the ankle bone. White midsoles pick up road film quickly: wipe them the same day with cool water and a soft cloth, never in a washing machine, and dry away from direct sun so the foam does not stiffen.
The credibility behind every fast Nike trainer is track, and track credibility began with Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete Nike endorsed and the one whose statue stands at its headquarters. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix followed as sponsored athletes, which is how a company that started by importing Japanese shoes ended up owning the aesthetic of speed. Since 31 January 2020, World Athletics has capped sole thickness at 40mm and permitted one rigid plate, and required shoes to be available at general retail, which pushed brands to make their fast shoes public rather than prototype only. Cerulean and white is the everyday face of that arms race.
This is a firm, propulsive trainer rather than a soft one, and you should expect that from the first stride. The upper is a light engineered textile built to hold the foot without adding weight, which is the same logic behind Flywire, Nike's cable based lockdown system that replaces material with tension. The midsole geometry is what does the work: a rockered shape that wants you to roll forward rather than sit back on the heel. Cerulean over white keeps the sidewall bright, so the midsole profile is legible from the side, which is Nike's habit of making the cushioning the design. Runners with a heavy heel strike will feel this shoe more than midfoot runners will.
