Released on 20 April 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Pure Platinum/Bright Mango/Cool Mint/Black. Nike has been in the business of foam since Bowerman decided that runners deserved something lighter than what the market sold them, a pursuit that ran through the waffle sole, then Lunarlite for weight, then ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive material the company makes. The Invincible 3 takes that racing material and builds it into a tall, soft platform for the runs that are not races. Pure Platinum with Cool Mint is its most designed colourway, a pale grey body with a soft green-blue wash, and it is the version that ends up worn far more often on pavements than on start lines. Recipe one, running: recovery runs, long easy efforts and days when your legs need protecting more than testing, with a light crew sock and grey or black kit so the mint stays the only colour. Recipe two, casual: grey wide trousers with a white tee and a pale blue overshirt, treating the shoe as a tonal design piece rather than as sportswear. Size true and lace firmly across the midfoot, because a tall soft stack needs a locked upper to feel stable. Walk the first day carefully. Clean the knit with cold water and a soft brush only, never machine wash, and keep the pale midsole off wet grass and mud.
The 1987 Air Max made cushioning itself into a design feature by cutting a window so people could see the Air unit, and everything since has followed that instinct: if the technology is the selling point, make it visible. Modern foam shoes do the same thing through sheer proportion, with the midsole taller than the upper and the shape doing the advertising. Nike Grind, which recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, is the other half of that conversation, since a maximal foam shoe raises a fair question about what happens to all that material. Pale colourways make the whole platform impossible to ignore.
A tall ZoomX midsole with no rigid plate, so the ride is absorbent rather than propulsive, matched to a knit upper with structured support through the midfoot and a padded heel. Nike's approach to uppers has consistently been about removing material rather than adding it, from Flywire, which uses cables to hold the foot with minimal upper, to knitted single-piece constructions, and that logic is why a shoe with this much midsole does not feel heavy on the foot. Style code HF4904 043 marks this make-up. Pure Platinum shows the knit texture clearly and marks easily, and a pale foam midsole will scuff before the upper does, so it needs cleaning as a habit.
