Released on 3 October 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Sea Glass/Sundial/Bright Crimson/Black. There is a certain nerve in putting No Finish Line on a shoe whose entire reason for existing is getting to one faster. The Vaporfly is the model that changed distance running: launched in 2017, it paired ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, with a full length carbon fibre plate, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. Nothing in the sport has been argued about more since. The Next% 3 is the current expression of that platform, and a message pack colourway takes the most technically loaded shoe Nike makes and points it at motivation rather than performance, which is either a contradiction or the whole brand in one object.
Race day: plain singlet and split shorts in a flat colour, because a shoe carrying printed text needs quiet kit, and pin the number where it does not flap against the message. Second use, the sharpening session: wear it for one goal paced workout in the fortnight before a race so your legs know the plate before it matters. Keep it off easy runs entirely, since ZoomX loses its bounce faster than a daily trainer foam and every wasted mile is a wasted race mile. Size to your usual Nike race length, snug with the toes clear. Rinse grit off with cool water and a soft brush, air dry, never machine wash a plated shoe.
The Vaporfly turned a shoe into a rules debate, which almost nothing else in athletics has managed. Nike's history in the sport gave it the standing to force that argument: Steve Prefontaine was its first endorsed track athlete, and the sponsored list since has included Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The message on this pack, though, is aimed lower down the field, at the same audience Just Do It addressed when it launched on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack. That combination, elite technology and amateur encouragement, is Nike's most consistent commercial position.
ZoomX is the lightest and most responsive foam Nike makes, and here it is stacked tall and wrapped around a full length carbon fibre plate that stiffens the midsole and drives the roll from midfoot to toe off. The upper is a thin engineered weave with minimal structure, because a race shoe cannot afford material it does not need, and on a message pack the theming is printed into that weave rather than added on top. World Athletics set competition rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring the shoe to be openly available at retail, and Vaporfly models built to those limits remain legal to race in.
