Released on 28 September 2024 and part of the Tokyo line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Gum. The Tokyo belongs to the city named retro runners in the adidas archive, the low profile training shoes that predate cushioning technology and rely on shape alone. That is a different lineage from the court and terrace models: no shell toe, no basketball history, just a slim running last, a tapered toe and a thin sole. Black with white and gum is the arrangement that suits it best, because the silhouette is delicate and a dark upper keeps the proportions looking sharp rather than dainty. The women's cut keeps the low volume of the original. It is a shoe that rewards people who already own the obvious adidas models and want something with the same DNA and less recognition.
Recipe one: straight leg black denim with a grey marl sweatshirt, where the slim silhouette keeps the leg line clean and the gum sole adds warmth to a cold palette. Recipe two: a long pleated skirt in olive or brown with a black knit, letting the retro runner's tapered toe do something a chunky trainer cannot under a long hem. These lasts run narrow and low volume, so size true and consider a half size up only if you have a high instep. Wear thin socks. Keep the suede dry, brush it with a crepe brush in one direction, use a suede eraser on scuffs, and clean the gum sole with an eraser sponge before it greys.
adidas's running archive is the deepest part of its catalogue and the least famous, which is exactly why terrace and casual dressing culture kept mining it after the Superstar and the Stan Smith had become the base layer of European casual wardrobes. City runners like the Tokyo circulate on a quieter frequency, worn by people who read shoes closely, which is a different and more durable kind of status.
Retro runners of this type are built from panelled suede and nylon or textile, layered so that each material sits where it is needed: suede at the toe, heel and overlays for abrasion resistance, lighter fabric across the quarter for breathability. The Three Stripes run down the sidewall stitched through the panels, structural as well as branded, a role the mark has held since adidas bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952. A gum rubber outsole with a thin wedge midsole carries the base, so the ride is flat and direct with a slight heel lift. Black across the upper with white on the stripes and detailing means the gum sole is the only warm element in the whole shoe.
