Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 November 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Gold Harvest/Black-Sail. Rookie Of The Year points at the season that started everything. Nike signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 to a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league, and gave him a royalty on sales, which was almost unheard of. The company was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own, so it bought a rookie rather than an established star. The first shoe was produced for him on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985. This High names that year directly, on the pattern that carried it.
Two recipes. Period correct: mid blue jeans cuffed above the collar, a white tee, a red or black varsity jacket, which is how this shape has always looked best. Or contemporary: black tapered trousers with a black crew, the High collar giving the outfit its only bulk. Never wear a High with a hem that breaks over the collar. Sizing is close to true, half up for wide feet, and full lacing locks the heel properly. Clean with foam and a soft brush, condition the leather a few times a year, and dry the collar padding fully between wears. White socks pulled to the collar are period correct and still look right.
That rookie season is also where the line's mythology comes from, and most people tell it wrong. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than change anything. Then it built the Banned advertising around the fine. That decision taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, a lesson the entire industry now runs on. A shoe named for the rookie season is naming the moment the modern sneaker business was invented.
The High cut in full: tall padded collar, the Wings logo of the earliest era, leather panels and a stitched rubber cupsole. Named releases like this one live on colour and detail rather than on new tooling, so what you are getting is the founding pattern with a story attached. Highs take the longest to break in, since the collar has to relax before the shoe stops holding your ankle, and they hold their shape longest afterwards. There is no cushioning system in this pattern that can fail with age, which is one reason the original silhouette outlasted the technical models that followed it.
