Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Black/White. All Star releases are basketball's exhibition weekend translated into product, and Jordan Brand has more claim to that weekend than anyone: Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake, signed to Nike in 1984, and the brand has been a standalone Nike division with its own roster since 1997. Putting the treatment on the Air Jordan 1 Low rather than a performance model is the modern call, because the Low is the shoe people actually wear to the event rather than in it. A commemorative shoe deserves a plain frame. Recipe one: black tapered trousers, a plain heavyweight tee, a varsity jacket, so the shoe's finish variations are the only detail on show. Recipe two: dark denim, a grey crewneck, a bomber, an everyday fit that lets you wear a collectable pair without treating it as a costume. Avoid anything with a competing graphic. Dry conditions, evenings and weekends. Size true, lace fully through the midfoot since the low cut gives no ankle support, clean by material section, and store in a cool dry place rather than a sealed box, since trapped moisture is what ruins special release finishes.
The All Star weekend is where basketball performs itself, and Jordan Brand's roster is deep in it, with signature athletes including Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and Luka Doncic and signed players including Russell Westbrook, Trae Young and Chris Paul. The brand's reach now runs well past the sport, into Michigan Wolverines football from 2016 and Paris Saint-Germain from 2018. Air Jordan's cultural weight was built earlier, through the Banned advertising, Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon films and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into their lyrics. An All Star 1 is a souvenir of a moment.
Event colourways generally add material and finish variation on top of the 1's fixed panel structure, so the shape stays familiar while the surfaces change, and that is what makes them collectable without being unwearable. Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the Air Jordan II, sits under the low cut, and the dropped collar puts all the lockdown into the midfoot lacing. Mixed finishes need mixed care: work section by section with a soft brush on textured areas and a damp cloth on smooth ones, rather than running a single wet wipe across the whole upper, which will leave tide marks where two materials meet.
