Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 April 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Desert/Pale Ivory/Fusion Red. A colourway named after a sandwich tells you exactly who this shoe is for. The Air Jordan 1 Mid is the version of the founding silhouette that exists to be worn rather than argued about, and the grade school SE run is where Jordan Brand takes its lightest, funniest swings. The 1 itself is serious history, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985. Peanut Butter and Jelly is that history relaxing: a warm and bright two tone story with no championship attached and no queue required to get it.
Two ways to wear it. First, let the colours be the outfit: plain white tee, plain black or indigo jeans, low white socks, and nothing else patterned. Second, match one tone: a sweatshirt picking up the warmer of the two colours, with neutral trousers, so the pairing looks intentional. The Mid collar sits awkwardly with a heavy stacked hem, so keep the trouser tidy or crop it. Clean the panel seams with a soft brush, wipe leather with a damp cloth rather than soaking, keep it out of the machine, and store with paper in the toe so the mid collar does not fold over.
The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, through Nike advertising that Spike Lee directed and appeared in as Mars Blackmon, and through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers on record. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale economy the model anchors has been valued near 2 billion dollars. Grade school special editions sit at the opposite end of that: no scarcity theatre, no story to memorise, just the most recognisable silhouette in sneakers wearing a colourway chosen because it is fun. That is a healthier relationship with the shoe.
The Mid sits between the High and Low, with a collar that clears the ankle bone without committing to a full boot, which is the easiest of the three to wear with a normal trouser. The build follows the 1's logic: panelled leather sections, a stitched Swoosh, a padded collar, foam midsole and flat rubber outsole. There is no Air unit, since Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward, so it is firm and close to the ground. A two tone colourway lives in the panel breaks, which means the shoe rewards being kept clean along the seams, where dirt gathers first and dulls the contrast that makes it work.
