Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 October 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Black/Pale Vanilla-Starfish. Shattered Backboard is the name Jordan Brand gives a black and orange arrangement of the Retro High OG, and the 3.0 marks it as the third entry in that series, which tells you the palette has become a franchise in its own right. That only happens with a shape people already read fluently. The proportions here are the archive ones, the tall padded collar, the wide stitched Swoosh and the Wings logo on the ankle panel, descended from the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed Michael Jordan in October 1984. Orange is not part of the founding Chicago palette, which is exactly why this series stands out inside the line.
Orange needs a quiet field. Black straight jeans, a black tee and a grey overshirt lets the shoe be the only colour event. For daytime, olive cargo trousers with a cream knit sits in the same warm family without competing directly. Never wear orange clothing with these. The high collar wants a cuffed or cropped hem rather than a stacked one, and if it presses the ankle, leave the top eyelets unlaced. Keep the pair out of prolonged sun, clean with a soft brush and foam rather than water, and if buying second hand, ask about midsole condition since old polyurethane degrades by hydrolysis.
A colourway strong enough to run to a third version says something about how the 1 works: the silhouette is stable enough that palettes become properties. That stability came from the shoe's original run, 50,000 pairs sold out and more than 150 million dollars in sales against a three million dollar plan, and from the culture that followed, Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and a collecting market later valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Named series inside that market carry their own resale weight.
The High OG build gives the orange somewhere clean to sit. Panels are cut and stitched separately, so the colour break between the body and the accent stays hard, and the shoe ages by creasing at the vamp rather than by finish flaking. The padded collar sits above the ankle bone and the Wings mark rides on the ankle panel. Underneath is a flat rubber cupsole with no cushioning window, since Nike Air entered the range at the Air Jordan 2. Orange fades faster in sunlight than black or red, so store in a box. Brush dry first, then clean panel by panel with a foam cleaner.
