Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 23 November 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Military Blue/Fire Red/Tech Grey. What The 4 is a shoe about other shoes. It takes the Air Jordan 4, from the Tinker Hatfield stretch when the line became a design series with its own vocabulary, and rebuilds it as a patchwork where each panel quotes a different make up from the model's own history. That is only possible because the 4's colourways are famous enough to be recognised one section at a time, which is a strange thing to be able to say about a basketball shoe. The Special Edition designation covers the licence to break the model's colour blocking entirely. Style code CI1184 146.
This shoe has every colour, so everything else has none. First: black straight leg trousers, a black tee, no visible branding anywhere, letting the collage read as the outfit's only content. Second: raw indigo denim with a single cuff and a plain grey sweatshirt, using blue and grey as a background. Never match one of the shoe's colours in a garment; it collapses the effect. Occasion is social, dry, daytime into evening. Fit is true to size with a structured toe box. Care: protector spray before first wear, dry brush for suede and mesh, damp cloth for smooth panels, and no soaking, since mixed materials dry at different rates and stain at the seams.
A mashup only works if the source material is common knowledge, and Air Jordan is one of the few clothing lines where it is. Original 1985 pairs of the first model have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the brand anchors is valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, which is the economic proof that the catalogue is memorised. The culture behind that came from the collision of basketball and hip hop, from rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and from Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising with Lee as Mars Blackmon.
The 4's fixed elements do the holding here: the plastic wing eyelets flanking the lacing, the mesh quarter panels for airflow, the moulded heel and the visible midsole geometry. Every one of those parts is rendered in a different colour and often a different material, leather against suede against mesh, so the shoe reads as a collage while keeping its silhouette. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan II and sits under a rubber outsole. Cleaning is the obvious complication: this is a shoe you clean panel by panel, dry brushing the napped sections and using a damp cloth only where the material is smooth.
