Released on 5 September 2023 and part of Hoka's Bondi 8 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Citrus Glow. Bondi is the most cushioned road shoe in Hoka's line, the model that takes the founding argument to its logical end. When Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard started the brand in Annecy in 2009, the industry was moving toward minimal and barefoot style shoes, and their response was midsoles two to three times thicker than normal. The Bondi is that response with nothing held back. In Black with Citrus Glow, the eighth version keeps the huge stack visually contained under a dark upper while a sharp citrus accent traces the branding, so the shoe reads serious first and playful second. It is the classic way to buy maximum cushion without wearing maximum colour.
Two uses. First, on your feet all day: dark scrubs, work trousers or black joggers, with the citrus accent as the only colour you carry. Second, recovery and easy miles: black shorts, grey tee, and a shoe that takes the sting out of pavement when your legs are already tired. It is best for standing shifts, long walks, easy runs and travel, and least suited to sharp sessions where you want ground feel. Fit true to size with a thumbnail at the toe, and expect to size the sock thin rather than thick given the shoe's volume. Wipe the upper weekly, air it between wears, and rotate pairs so the foam recovers.
The Bondi is the shoe most responsible for Hoka's second life. Once the cushioning translated from trail to road, hospital and clinic staff working twelve hour shifts adopted the most cushioned road models, and that word of mouth inside healthcare carried the brand into general consumer awareness faster than any campaign. Ask around a hospital and the maximal Hoka silhouette is a fixture, not a trend. Black with a citrus accent is the practical version of that: dark enough for a workplace where clothing rules exist, with just enough colour to signal it is a running shoe rather than an orthopaedic one. It is the most quietly popular kind of Hoka there is.
Everything here is about volume of foam under the foot and what that does across hours rather than kilometres. Hoka's house geometry, a low heel to toe drop paired with a rounded sole, is what stops a stack this deep from feeling stodgy: the roll carries you into the next step. The heel sits down inside the midsole walls, a bucket seat approach that gives stability without adding stiffness, which matters more the taller a shoe gets. Black hides the marks a soft foam shoe picks up around the edges, and the Citrus Glow accents will stay sharp longer if you clean them early. Use mild soap and a soft brush, dry in shade, and keep the midsole away from heat.
