JORDAN 1 RETRO HIGH GOLF EASTSIDE GOLF 1961
JORDAN 1 RETRO HIGH GOLF EASTSIDE GOLF 1961
Culture Noteā¢
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Malachite/Metallic Gold/White. A Jordan 1 built for a golf course is a strange sentence until you remember what this shoe already survived: a league uniform rule, a fine Nike was happy to pay, and a jump from hardwood to sidewalk that no basketball model had made before. This Retro High Golf edition carries the Eastside Golf name and the year 1961 on it, tying the shoe to a sport that spent most of its history keeping people out. The silhouette itself is Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, released to the public on 1 April 1985 and turned into a design language by Tinker Hatfield from the Air Jordan III onward. Putting it on a fairway is the same move the brand has always made: take the shape somewhere it does not belong yet.
Utility
On the course: cream or stone trousers with a pique polo, belt matched to the darker panel of the shoe, and a quarter zip for early tee times. The high collar sits above the trouser break, so a slimmer leg keeps the proportion right. Off the course: dark jeans, a knit polo and an unstructured jacket takes the same pair straight to lunch, which is the practical argument for a golf shoe that looks like this. Wear proper cushioned golf socks rather than no shows, since you are walking several kilometres. Brush turf out of the outsole while it is still damp, let them dry away from direct heat, and keep a second pair for wet rounds.
Influence
Jordan Brand's reach past basketball is well documented: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team from 2016, first association football sponsorship with Paris Saint Germain in 2018, and a signed roster that spans the NFL with Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott and MLB with Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter. Golf is the natural extension of that logic, a sport with a strict dress code and a very old idea of who belongs in it. Putting the most culturally loaded sneaker silhouette of the last forty years on that course is a statement in itself, and it does not need a celebrity attached to land.
Construction
The high cut upper is leather with the collar height and panel breaks of the retro 1, adapted to a golf build, which means the outsole and traction package differ from the street version and the shoe is meant to be walked on turf rather than pavement. Expect a stiffer platform than a lifestyle pair and a collar that supports the ankle through a swing's weight transfer. Because the specifics of the traction and any waterproofing are not published here, treat this as a course shoe first: it will handle a round comfortably and look correct in the clubhouse, but it is not a running or training shoe. Clean the outsole of turf and sand after every round so the tread does not pack solid.
