The 1000 comes out of the stretch when New Balance numbered its running shoes like equipment and let the engineering show. A four digit number in this catalogue was never decorative, it signalled where a shoe sat in the hierarchy, and the 1000 is a revival of that mindset rather than a new idea. Sea Salt Heron Blue keeps it calm: sea salt is a soft off white with grey in it, and heron blue is a muted, greyed blue rather than a bright one, so the pair reads as weathered rather than new. That restraint is very much this brand. New Balance built its identity on things competitors abandoned, domestic manufacturing and technical fit, and its best colourways tend to whisper rather than shout.
