Part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Light Grey/Deep Ocean. An Easter pack is a seasonal exercise in softening, and pairing light grey with deep ocean is the grown-up version of it: the pale grey does the spring work while the deep blue keeps the shoe from turning saccharine. Putting that on the 9060 is a good match, because the model is already a distortion of the 99x running family, the line running from the 990 in 1982 through the 991, 992 and 993, and it takes colour better than a purist reissue would. New Balance has always been at ease in grey, which is the shade its most famous shoes made into a signature, so even a seasonal release starts from home ground.
Utility
Light grey and deep ocean is a spring palette that survives the rest of the year. Recipe one is soft layering: light grey sweatpants, a white tee, a navy chore jacket, where the two shoe tones repeat top and bottom. Recipe two is cleaner: cream wide leg trousers with a pale blue shirt, letting the deep ocean base ground an otherwise very light outfit. Give it trouser width, because the 9060 needs volume around it. Best for daytime, walking and travel. Pale grey panels mark easily, so protect them before first wear, brush off dust before it works into the seams, and clean with mild soap and a soft cloth rather than soaking the upper.
Influence
Seasonal packs only work on shoes people already care about, and the 9060 qualifies because New Balance's archive became culturally central. The 990 family turned into the American dad shoe, plain, grey and comfort-first, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness as a design position. The 9060 is the playful counterpart to the careful reissue programme that Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis has overseen as creative director of Made in USA since April 2021. Soft seasonal colour is the brand testing how far the shape can travel outside sneaker culture.
Construction
Two-tone builds like this one use depth to draw the shoe. Light grey carries the larger panels and the upper's main body, while deep ocean sinks the base, the overlays and the side wall block N, so the 9060's curved side wall and sculpted midsole shaping read clearly instead of blending into one field of colour. The model carries considerable underfoot volume, inherited from the 99x line, and New Balance's ENCAP thinking sits behind that lineage: a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core, giving stability with low compression set rather than a soft midsole that flattens. Use the width fittings, which are the brand's oldest and most useful technical promise.
