Part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Sea Salt/Moonbeam/Dawn Glow. More Of What You Need is a joke a brand can only make once it knows what it is, and New Balance knows exactly what it is. The 9060 is the shape it built to answer its own reputation: the 99x line has been the premium spine since the 990 arrived in 1982, running through the 991, 992 and 993, and the 9060 reads that archive back with the volume turned up, more sculpting, more mass, more shoe. A title like this one leans into the excess rather than pretending it is not there. This is the same company that started in 1906 outside Boston making arch supports, which makes the self awareness funnier. The code U9060RSB identifies this pair.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. Black wide leg trousers with a grey hoodie keeps the outfit simple enough that the silhouette carries the whole look, which is what this shape is for. Or ecru wide leg denim with a navy knit for a softer version where the shoe still dominates but does not shout. Do not pair it with a narrow tapered hem, because the mass at the floor needs a trouser with enough width to sit over it. Wear it for walking, weekends and travel. Buy true to length, use width fittings if the midfoot presses, brush the upper dry before any wet cleaning, and clean the midsole separately since the pale foam edge is the first thing to look tired.
Influence
The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe entirely by accident, the grey suburban running shoe worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. Normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s and turned grey suede into a design position. The 9060 is the brand's answer to being reclaimed, and it does not pretend otherwise. Since Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, treating the archive as a fashion line has been official policy rather than an accident of taste.
Construction
The 9060 is a study in layering, and any makeup on it should be judged by how the panels separate. Stacked overlays across the upper, a deep sculpted side wall and a midsole with enough shaping to hold shadow mean the shape stays legible even in low contrast colour, and it turns loud contrast into something graphic rather than messy. The trade is weight and volume, so this is a shoe you feel on the foot. Underfoot, this house has separated structure from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a polyurethane rim around a soft foam core, and that thinking underpins the whole 99x family. Expect planted stability rather than bounce, and expect the fit to be resolved by width.
