Released on 21 July 2022 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/White/Gum. Black White Gum is the women's 327 borrowing a piece of old running shoe vocabulary. Gum rubber was what outsoles were made of before the industry standardised on white, and putting it under a black and white upper gives the shoe a warmth that a full white sole would strip out. The 327 already trades on that kind of memory. It takes the low profile and flared outsole of New Balance's older racing shapes and enlarges the block N, the house mark, until it runs across most of the side wall. Adding gum finishes the reference without turning the shoe into a period piece.
Wear it with cropped straight leg denim and a white tee, letting the gum sole warm up an otherwise stark black and white outfit, socks white at the ankle. The second recipe is softer, a cream or camel knit with tan trousers, where the gum outsole ties the shoe to the warm tones and the black N keeps it from going bland. This is a flat everyday shoe for city days and evenings rather than long walking. Gum rubber yellows with sunlight and picks up dirt at the sidewall, so wipe it down with a damp cloth regularly and store the shoes out of direct light.
New Balance's plainness became a design position through the 2010s, when normcore and then high fashion reclaimed the ordinariness the brand had spent a century building. That reclamation is what made a shoe like the 327 possible: once the block N carried meaning, the design department could scale it up and let it be the whole product. The brand's collaborators have always been designers and independents rather than celebrity signings, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models, and inline shoes like this borrow that graphic confidence for the general range.
The upper mixes suede and mesh with synthetic panels, the oversized N cut as a structural element rather than applied as a graphic, black and white split so the logo reads at maximum contrast. Underneath, the flared gum outsole extends beyond the upper and wraps up at the heel, giving the 327 its distinctive stance and a grippier feel than a hard white rubber. This is a low, firm shoe, not a cushioned one, with none of the volume of the brand's ABZORB and ENCAP runners. New Balance's multiple width fittings remain its oldest technical promise, worth using here because a slim shoe offers nowhere for a wide foot to go.
