Culture Note™
Released on 20 May 2024 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a konbu upper in Yellow/White. Yellow and White on the slip on is the brand's signature colour pairing stripped of its laces and half its drama. Yellow and black is the combination Onitsuka Tiger is known for, tied to the tiger the founder chose in Kobe in 1949 for strength and agility. Swapping the black for white cools the whole thing down: the yellow becomes the body, the white becomes the crossed Tiger Stripes and the sole edge, and the shoe reads bright rather than graphic. Take the lacing off a 1966 racing flat and put it in a summer yellow and you get something with no relationship to sport at all, which is the point.
Two recipes. First, white linen shorts with a plain white tee, letting the yellow carry the whole outfit and the white stripes tie back to the clothes. Second, pale grey wide leg trousers with a white shirt, a calmer fit where the yellow works as a single accent at the floor. Never pair with another bright colour. This is a hot weather and travel shoe, easy on and off, and it suits daytime plans. Size carefully since there are no laces to adjust. Protect the yellow before first wear, wipe dust off frequently to keep the colour bright, and clean the white stripes separately with a soft brush.
Yellow on this brand always carries a screen echo. A yellow and black Onitsuka style shoe was worn in Bruce Lee's Game of Death, released in 1978, though accounts conflict over which model it actually was and the film shoe carries a different stripe pattern from the Mexico 66. Uma Thurman then wore yellow and black Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi shoes as The Bride in Kill Bill Volume 1 in 2003, a direct homage to Lee that landed as Asics was reviving the brand as fashion. This white striped slip on quotes that colour lineage at a distance rather than reenacting it, which is why it reads as summer rather than as costume.
With no lacing, the shoe holds the foot through the elastic gore at the throat and the narrow last alone, so getting the size right matters more here than on any laced model in the range. The Tiger Stripes stay as panel overlays across the quarter, carrying structural load now that the eyestay is gone. The profile stays low and the cupsole stays thin, so the ground feel is unchanged. Yellow is a demanding surface: it dulls with dust faster than any other colour here and can pick up dye from dark denim if worn damp, and the white stripes and sole edge need separate attention.
