Origin
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 15 November 2025 as part of the Stan Smith line. This release has the Core Black/Core Black/Cloud White colourway. The Stan Smith is the most neutral shoe adidas makes, which is exactly why it keeps getting handed to partners with something loud to say. Underneath the SpongeBob SquarePants treatment is the same low tennis silhouette that became, with the Superstar, the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing and the foundation of adidas Originals. This execution goes the opposite way from the usual white leather: Black patent leather, a high shine surface that turns the shoe into an object before you notice any character detailing at all. Freizeit is simply the German word for leisure, and it fits, because a glossy black cartoon Stan Smith is not pretending to be a tennis shoe.
Utility
Gloss black does a lot of the work, so keep the clothes matte. Recipe one: black straight trousers with a white tee and a grey overshirt, letting the patent finish be the only shine in the fit. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans with a black knit and no visible sock, a monochrome build where the collaboration details are the only colour anywhere. Patent leather needs a soft damp cloth and nothing abrasive, since brushes and cleaning solutions will haze the finish permanently. Wipe fingerprints and dust the same day. Store it away from heat, which can bubble a patent surface, and accept that creasing across the toe is unavoidable on any smooth finish.
Influence
adidas learned early that its silhouettes gain power when other people write on them. Run-DMC released My Adidas in 1986 without any commission, held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden with an adidas executive watching, and the endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. Since then the brand has opened its archive to designers including Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney, Raf Simons and Jeremy Scott, and to partners far outside fashion. A cartoon collaboration on a Stan Smith belongs to that tradition of the blank shoe as a platform. In black patent it lands as nostalgic rather than childish, which is the harder balance to strike.
Construction
Patent leather changes everything about how this shoe behaves. The Stan Smith's perforated Three Stripe panel, adidas's most restrained use of a mark it bought from Karhu Sports in 1952, reads very differently on a mirror finish than on matte white, catching light along the perforations instead of sitting flat. Patent also creases more visibly across the toe box and holds every fingerprint, so this is a shoe that wants wiping rather than brushing. The cupsole and low profile are unchanged, keeping the silhouette clean under the gloss, and the collaboration details sit as accents on the heel and tongue rather than being sprayed across the upper. Black keeps the whole thing wearable.
