Released on 12 December 2023 and part of Nike's Vomero 17 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Platinum Tint/Racer Blue/Thunder Blue. White with Thunder Blue is the version of the Vomero 17 built for daylight: a bright upper with a deep, cool blue running through it, closer to a summer kit than to the dark trainers most people default to. The Vomero occupies the comfort end of Nike's running line, which is the least fashionable and most used part of the catalogue. It descends directly from Bowerman's founding complaint that running shoes were too heavy and too crude, a complaint that started as imported Japanese shoes sold from a car boot in 1964 and turned into the largest running range in the world.
Two uses. One, road training: easy and long runs in daylight, with light technical socks and laces snug through the midfoot and relaxed at the toes. Two, off duty: navy trousers or dark denim, a white tee, a blue overshirt, where the colourway looks intentional rather than sporty. Leave a thumbnail of toe room when you size, since heat swells feet fast. Care is the usual foam discipline: rinse cool, mild soap only, insoles out, newspaper in, dry in shade. Never machine wash, never dry in direct sun, and rotate pairs so the midsole can rebound between sessions. Track your kilometres so you know when the foam is finished.
Nike's Indian story is more complicated than its global one. It entered in 1995 through a licensing deal with Sierra Industrial Enterprises, now SSIPL, set up Nike India in the mid 2000s, and spent years priced roughly thirty percent above competitors, reporting no net profit from 2006 until the financial year ending 2019 and closing around 200 stores from 2017. Cricket sponsorship, which it held for the national team from 2005, never rose above about two percent of its Indian sales. The running range is where the brand's Indian relevance actually sits now, sold to people training in cities rather than to fans buying a jersey.
A maximal neutral trainer has one job: absorb thousands of identical impacts without letting your foot wander. That means a thick foam platform, a midfoot that stays stable under all that softness, and an upper that keeps holding as your foot swells. Nike's fabric platform for sweat management is Dri-FIT, and its approach to minimal, supportive uppers grew out of Flywire, where cables carry the containment load instead of extra layers. This colourway is mostly light, which means visible dirt in any Indian city, so plan on rinsing after dusty runs and keeping a soft brush for the upper rather than scrubbing hard.
