Designed by Kanye West and released on 17 February 2022 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Slate Red/Slate Red/Slate Red. Slate Red belongs to the CMPCT run, the simplified edit of the 350 V2 that appeared at the very end of the adidas era, and it is the version that keeps colour in the mix. Where the Slate family mostly played in greys and blacks, this one puts a deep red through the knit, a tone closer to oxide and brick than to a primary. That fits the naming habit the line has always had, borrowing from stone and pigment rather than from fashion terminology, in the tradition of Pirate Black, Moonrock and Desert Rat. On a stripped down upper, the colour has to carry the shoe, and here it does.
Utility
Deep oxide red is far easier to wear than a bright red, which is the argument for this pair. Recipe one: charcoal wide leg trousers and a black crewneck, where the red reads as a warm accent rather than a statement. Recipe two: raw indigo denim with a cream heavyweight knit, an autumnal fit where the red sits naturally against blue and off white. Avoid pairing with burgundy or orange, which flattens it. Take your true size and let the knit relax over the first week. Red knit dulls in strong sun, so store away from windows. Clean by hand with cold water and a soft brush and keep the Boost midsole away from bleach based cleaners.
Influence
The 350 V2 is the shoe that made the sneaker drop a mainstream event, and by the time these CMPCT variants shipped, that entire apparatus of queues, bots and resale had already been dismantled. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, stating the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and sold through remaining inventory afterwards. What that leaves is a late, simplified version of one of the most recognisable silhouettes of the 2010s, in a colourway that never had a chance to build its own release mythology.
Construction
The upper is Primeknit, machine knitted as a single continuous piece so the red runs unbroken around the foot and deepens where the knit tightens across the midfoot. The CMPCT treatment removes surface detail from the silhouette, which puts more weight on the knit texture and the profile than a standard V2 does. Below sits adidas Boost, the expanded TPU pellet foam responsible for the line's rebound and its speckled midsole face, with rubber at the ground contact points. A heel pull tab handles entry and the collar stretches to let the foot through. As always in this catalogue, no visible logo appears anywhere on the shoe.
