Released on 20 October 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Sail/Ghost Green/White. The Zoom Fly sits deliberately between two shoes: it borrows from the racing programme that produced the Vaporfly, where ZoomX foam and a full length carbon plate were paired to generate extra spring, and it is built to survive the training that leads up to a race rather than only the race itself. Black with Ghost Green is the right uniform for that role. Black is the colour of the shoe you use most, and the pale acid green running through it is the signal that this is not a comfort trainer. It is the pair you put on for the session that matters in the week, not the one on Sunday morning.
Recipe one, sessions: black shorts, a black long sleeve, green socks or a green cap picking up the Ghost Green so the kit reads as deliberate. Recipe two, off duty: black joggers with a tapered cuff and a grey hoodie, where black keeps the shoe from looking like obvious running gear. Use it for tempo runs, threshold work, progression long runs and marathon pace sessions on road. It is too firm for recovery days and too heavy for track racing. Fit true to size with a thumb of toe room and a snug midfoot. Air it after every session, spot clean the upper, and never machine wash or heat dry the midsole.
The technology this shoe descends from changed the rules of the sport. The Vaporfly, launched in 2017, paired ZoomX with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. World Athletics responded on 31 January 2020 by capping sole thickness at 40mm, limiting shoes to one rigid plate and requiring four months of general retail availability, and compliant models remain legal. That is the shadow every fast Nike road shoe now runs in, and a training partner to a race shoe is how the technology reaches people who will never be regulated by it.
A firm, propulsive road shoe built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in Nike's range, in a construction tuned for durability rather than for the minimum possible weight. The Zoom Fly's whole reason for existing is that pure racing shoes wear out too fast to train in, so expect more outsole rubber, a more substantial upper and a firmer, more directive ride than a race day shoe would give you. Black carries the upper with Ghost Green accents, which is the practical choice for a shoe doing repeated hard sessions on road. The ride is quick and stiff underfoot, not soft, and it rewards faster paces.
