The Zoom Fly is the shoe that sits one step below Nike's racing flagships, built for the runner who wants propulsion on a Tuesday rather than only on a start line. It exists because of what the racing programme found: the Vaporfly, launched in 2017, paired ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate and peer research measured marathon improvements of up to 4.2 percent, which made every tier below it worth rebuilding. This edition carries the name of the marathoner it is styled after, which is a rare thing in distance running, a sport where equipment usually stays anonymous. Naming a trainer after a marathon runner is Nike admitting that in road running the athlete, not the team, is the entire story.
Session one: tempo and threshold work, where the rocker keeps you honest and the firmness gives feedback that a soft trainer swallows. Session two: half marathon race day, or a marathon if you would rather not spend a race shoe's short lifespan. Do not use it for recovery runs, since a propulsive midsole punishes tired legs. Wear low socks that clear the collar and lace it once with firm tension across the midfoot. Wipe the upper down after wet runs and dry at room temperature, never near heat. Rotate with a softer daily trainer, because running every session in a rockered shoe loads the calves harder than most people expect.
Nike understood before most of the industry that amateur distance running would become a data culture. Nike+ paired the company with Apple to put run tracking into the shoe itself, which turned a solitary hobby into something you could publish, compare and defend, and it changed what a running shoe was expected to do for you.
