Released on 15 November 2024 and part of the Harden Vol. 8 line. This release has a knit upper in Pulse Magenta/Core Black/Lucid Cyan. James Harden is adidas's signature basketball athlete, and the Vol. 8 is the eighth chapter of a line built around one of the most idiosyncratic offensive players of his era. That is the oldest habit in the company: Adolf Dassler made shoes for specific athletic events after watching athletes work rather than guessing from a factory floor, and a signature basketball model is the modern version of that brief. Red Blend takes the shoe into a saturated, mottled colourway rather than a flat team block, so the upper looks worked rather than printed. It puts the Vol. 8 closer to the release culture end of basketball, where the colourway is discussed as much as the traction pattern, without giving up the fact that this is a shoe designed to be played in.
On court, wear a cushioned crew sock and lace through the top eyelet, since a guard's shoe is only as good as its heel lock. Off court, recipe one: black wide leg sweatpants with a plain white tee and a varsity jacket, letting the red do all the talking below the hem. Recipe two: dark indigo denim with a grey hoodie, where the mottled red reads as an accent rather than a costume. Fit is performance snug, true to size, with almost no give in the synthetic zones. Keep them off concrete if you want the traction pattern to survive a season. Wipe the outsole with a damp cloth before every game so dust does not kill grip, air the insoles out between sessions, and never machine wash them.
adidas basketball has two eras. The first was the Superstar, launched in 1969, reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters, then adopted wholesale by hip hop, which gave the brand a second life it had not designed. The second is the signature era, where James Harden is adidas's basketball athlete. The Vol. 8 belongs entirely to the second, a shoe with no interest in the archive. In India, where the NBA's audience has grown through streaming rather than through arenas, a signature shoe in a loud colourway travels on screens first and courts second.
A guard's shoe is engineered around deceleration, and the Vol. 8 is built for a player whose whole game is stopping suddenly and changing direction. That means a wide, stable base, an outsole pattern cut to bite hardwood on lateral loads, and a midfoot that locks the foot down so it does not slide over the platform when you cut. The upper mixes textile and synthetic zones so that flex points stay soft while the loaded areas stay rigid. adidas's cushioning philosophy since Boost launched in adidas running in 2013 has been energy return over plush softness, and the same principle runs through its basketball platforms. Red Blend is a mottled treatment across the upper, so scuffing shows less than it would on a flat single tone.
