Released on 16 December 2022 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Orange Peel/Cloud White/Gold Metallic. Orange Peel is the Gazelle Indoor refusing to be a neutral. The silhouette itself is one of adidas's plainest, a low, flat, close cut gym shoe with no cushioning story and no technology to explain, which is why it takes strong colour so well: there is nothing on the shoe to argue with a saturated tone. Orange Peel is warm and slightly zesty rather than a hard safety orange, and the gum sole underneath is the perfect partner for it, matching temperature rather than fighting it. On a women's last the proportions stay slim, so the colour reads as sharp instead of bulky, which is the difference between this and a chunky orange sneaker.
Orange needs one anchor colour and no competition. Recipe one: mid blue straight jeans with a white tee, the simplest and strongest pairing, since blue and orange sit opposite each other and the gum sole bridges them. Recipe two: cream wide leg trousers with a chocolate brown knit, a warm build where the shoe becomes the brightest point in a tonal outfit. Keep it away from monsoon puddles, since bright uppers water stain more visibly than dark ones. Brush dry first, spot clean with foam rather than soaking, and use a magic sponge on the gum sole. Store out of direct sun, which fades warm tones faster than cool ones.
Originals product like this exists because adidas's sport archive got adopted by people who were not playing. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the low indoor shapes came with them into everyday wear, where they were valued for being flat and unfussy. The current wave of the archive has gone the other way, using bright and unexpected colour to separate one pair from the next rather than relying on the silhouette alone. Orange Peel is that shift stated plainly. It is a shoe bought for the colour first, with a genuinely good silhouette underneath it.
The indoor build is all about being low. A close cut upper, a slim waist and a flat gum outsole designed to grip a hard floor keep the foot near the ground, with no stacked heel and no padding to add volume. The Three Stripes run the quarters as structural banding, which adidas has done since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and in a tonal or contrast execution on orange they are the only geometry breaking the colour field. Gum outsoles darken and yellow with wear, which against Orange Peel will warm the shoe further over time. Expect a thin footbed and a break in period that is about moulding rather than softening.
