Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 18 August 2023 as part of the Stan Smith line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Green/Cream White. The Stan Smith is the plainest famous shoe in the world: a white leather tennis silhouette with perforated stripes instead of stitched ones, so restrained that it became, alongside the Superstar, the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing. That blankness is exactly why it works as a canvas. This pair hands it to The Simpsons and to Homer, so the standard heel patch portrait gets replaced by the show's least ambitious man and the accent colour turns to his unmistakable yellow. The comedy only works because the original is so severe. You are wearing the most conservative shoe in the catalogue with a cartoon face where the tennis player should be.
Yellow is the loudest thing here, so ration it. Mid wash straight jeans, a plain white tee and a navy jacket lets the shoe carry all the colour, and a yellow detail elsewhere, a sock or a cap, ties it together without turning into a costume. For a smarter fit, grey flannel trousers with a white shirt keeps the Stan Smith doing its usual job of dressing down tailoring, with the cartoon as a private joke. Wear white socks, low or crew, never black. This is a flat, hard soled shoe, so it is right for city days and wrong for long standing. Clean the white weekly or the joke stops being funny.
adidas learned early that culture adopts its shoes without being asked. The Superstar was taken up by hip hop after its NBA run, and Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid before the first ever endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed in 1986. Licensed pop culture pairs like this one are the deliberate version of that accident: the brand choosing a property that everyone already knows and letting recognition do the work. The Simpsons is one of the few properties broad enough to sit on a shoe this famous without being outshone by it. Two blank cultural constants, put on top of each other.
White leather remains the base, because any other colour would break the joke. The Three Stripes appear as punched perforations through the quarter panel rather than as stitched overlays, which is the detail that separates a Stan Smith from every other white leather trainer and the one thing a copy always gets slightly wrong. Homer artwork replaces the usual heel tab portrait, and yellow detailing runs through the tongue, lining and trim. Underneath sits a flat rubber cupsole with no cushioning story attached. White leather is the easiest sneaker material to maintain: wipe it weekly, use a soft eraser on scuffs, and never bleach it, because bleach yellows the midsole permanently.
