Part of Nike's Vomero 17 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Light Smoke Grey/White/Volt. Volt is Nike's loudest functional colour, a yellow green that exists because it is the shade the human eye picks up fastest in poor light, and against black it turns the Vomero 17 into a shoe designed to be seen at six in the morning. The Vomero sits at the plush end of the range, the maximum cushioning daily trainer for runners who want depth underfoot rather than snap. That priority goes back further than the model: Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 because he believed runners were being sold heavy, unkind shoes, and softness has been an engineering goal at Nike ever since it started making its own.
Running: black shorts or tights with a light or reflective top, and let the Volt at the foot mark your stride for drivers in low light, which is the practical reason this colourway exists. Casual: black jeans or joggers with a grey hoodie, keeping Volt as the single accent so the shoe reads as sportswear rather than as kit. Use it for easy runs, long slow mileage, recovery days and standing shifts where the deep foam earns its keep. Size half up from your casual shoe for distance. Wash by hand in cool water with mild soap and a soft brush, dry the insole separately, and keep the foam away from radiators and hot cars.
Nike's understanding that running is a public act starts with Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete it endorsed and still the brand's shorthand for running as attitude. Volt is the modern extension of that idea, the colour Nike has used to make its athletes and its customers legible in a crowd, and the sponsored roster from Sebastian Coe and Carl Lewis through Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix gave the palette its association with speed. On a cushioned daily trainer, though, the colour is doing a plainer job: it is a safety feature. Nike Grind, which recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, is where a trainer like this eventually goes.
The defining feature is stack: a tall, deep foam midsole that puts a lot of material between you and the road, which is what gives the Vomero its plush, slightly insulated ride. Nike's foam programme runs from Lunarlite at the light end to ZoomX, the altered Pebax compound used in its race shoes, and the daily trainers sit between those poles with durability weighted above return. The upper is engineered mesh in black with Volt detailing on the Swoosh, laces and heel, so the bright colour appears exactly where movement makes it visible. Black uppers hide road spray well. Expect a heavier shoe than a tempo trainer and a wide, planted feel rather than a nimble one.
