Released on 27 September 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Honey Dew/Black/Sail/Buff Gold. The Zoom Fly sits one step below Nike's racing shoes and one step above its daily trainers, which makes it the most useful shoe in the running range for anyone who is not being paid to run. It exists because of what happened in 2017, when the Vaporfly paired ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and every shoe Nike has built since has had to answer that. This is the fifth edition in Honey Dew, style code FV3632 301, a soft pale green that reads calm rather than competitive. It is the training partner to the race day shoe.
Use it for the fast half of your week. Recipe one: tempo runs and long runs at goal pace in shorts and a technical tee, with thin socks, letting the plate do its work at a rhythm rather than a jog. Recipe two: a race day shoe for a half marathon if you do not own a dedicated racer, worn with a singlet and a light cap. The pale Honey Dew looks sharp fresh and marks quickly, so keep it for runs rather than errands. Size with a thumbnail of toe room; plated shoes punish a cramped toe box on descents. Air dry only, never machine wash, never leave them baking in a car, and retire them when the ride goes flat rather than when the outsole wears.
The plated era is the biggest technical argument distance running has had in decades, and Nike started it. World Athletics responded on 31 January 2020 with limits capping sole thickness at 40mm and one rigid plate, and requiring shoes to be available at general retail, so the sport chose regulation over prohibition, and compliant models in this family remain legal. That rulebook is why a plated shoe is now something an amateur can buy and race in rather than a prototype handed to a sponsored athlete. Nike's running credibility that made this possible started with Steve Prefontaine, the brand's first track endorser, whose statue stands at its headquarters.
This class of shoe is built around a plate and a tall midsole, with the plate's job being to stiffen the ride so the foot rolls forward instead of collapsing at toe off. Nike's foam thinking runs from Lunarlite, a lightweight foam, through to ZoomX, its lightest and most responsive material, and the trainer versions of the racing line typically use a firmer, longer lasting setup than the race shoe so the miles do not destroy it. The Honey Dew colouring is applied to a thin, breathable racing style upper, which means it will show creasing and dirt honestly. No stack figure, weight or plate specification is published to you here, so run in it before you commit to it for a marathon build.
