Released on 21 June 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/Racer Blue/High Voltage/White. ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive in the range, developed for the Vaporfly and its full length carbon plate. The Invincible line takes that same racing foam and points it in the opposite direction: not at a time on a clock, but at the volume of running you can do without breaking. Black with Racer Blue is the colourway that keeps that intention plain. Black hides road grime across a winter of mileage, and the blue is the only thing on the shoe asking for attention. It is a maximal amount of foam presented with a minimal amount of noise, which is exactly right for a shoe designed to be worn most days.
Recipe one, running: black tights or shorts, a black long sleeve, a blue cap or blue socks picking up the Racer Blue so the kit reads deliberate. Recipe two, off duty: black joggers with a tapered cuff, a grey hoodie, where the knit upper lets the shoe pass as casual footwear. Use it for easy days, recovery runs and long slow mileage on road and treadmill. It is too soft and too tall for track work, racing or trails. Size true with a thumb of toe room, and expect the knit to feel snug before it relaxes. Air it after every run, spot clean the knit, and never machine wash a foam midsole.
The foam under this shoe is the same technology family that forced a rules change: peer research found the Vaporfly could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and World Athletics responded on 31 January 2020 by capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability, with compliant models remaining legal. Everyday runners inherited the benefit without the scrutiny. Nike's running credibility was established long before that, through Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, with a statue at the company's headquarters. This shoe is that inheritance in its least glamorous, most useful form.
A high stack neutral trainer built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam Nike developed as the lightest and most responsive it makes, with a Flyknit upper. Flyknit gives you a sock like fit that moves with the foot rather than constraining it, which matters on a shoe with this much foam underneath, because the upper is the only thing keeping you stable on a tall platform. The ride is soft, bouncy and protective rather than fast and precise. Black upper with Racer Blue accents is the practical option for daily mileage, since dark knit hides salt and spray. High stack foam compresses over time, so watch for the ride going flat rather than the upper wearing out.
