Released on 7 January 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Metallic Silver/Black. The Streakfly is Nike's shortest, lightest race shoe, the one built for distances where a heavy foot costs you seconds you cannot get back. It descends directly from Bill Bowerman's original complaint in the early 1960s, that American runners deserved lighter shoes than the market gave them, a complaint that made him ruin a waffle iron to find a lighter sole and made Blue Ribbon Sports into a manufacturer instead of an importer of Onitsuka Tiger. ZoomX is the modern answer, an altered Pebax foam Nike calls the lightest and most responsive it makes. White with Metallic Silver is a racing finish: no weight in the colour, no distraction, just a shoe that looks fast standing still. Style code DJ6566 101.
This is a race day and speed session shoe, so treat it as equipment. First: split shorts and a singlet on a 5k or 10k start line, silver catching the light and nothing else on your feet worth thinking about. Second: light shorts and a technical tee for track intervals, where the low, light platform lets you feel the surface. Size to race fit, snug with a small amount of toe room, since a loose racing shoe wastes energy. Rotate it out of daily mileage to preserve the foam. Clean white mesh with cold water and a soft cloth only, never a stiff brush, and air dry it flat away from any heat source.
ZoomX is the material that forced the sport to write new rules. The Vaporfly launched in 2017 pairing ZoomX with a full length carbon fibre plate, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, which was enough for World Athletics to publish limits on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing only one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability. Compliant models remain legal. That controversy raised the temperature around every Nike race shoe, and the Streakfly benefits from it: it inherits the aura of the technology while sitting at the short, stripped back end of the range.
Race shoes are subtraction. The upper is a thin engineered mesh with almost no overlay, the tongue is minimal, the collar is barely padded, and every gram removed is deliberate. ZoomX is the midsole, the same altered Pebax family Nike developed for the Vaporfly, here in a lower, quicker configuration suited to shorter racing rather than marathon absorption. Metallic Silver sits as the accent because reflective detail is the one non structural feature a racing shoe still earns. Thin uppers are fragile by design. They are not built for a thousand kilometres of commuting, and white mesh on a race day shoe should be cleaned gently and rarely rather than scrubbed.
