Released on 3 July 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in Multi-Color/Multi-Color. The Pegasus is Nike's workhorse, the shoe that has to be right for the largest number of runners rather than perfect for a few, and getting to a forty first version says more about consistency than about innovation. The Blueprint Pack dresses it in the language of the drawing board, which is a fair thing for this line to celebrate: the Pegasus is where Nike's ideas get tested against ordinary miles before they are trusted anywhere else. The company's engineering instinct goes back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron to make a lighter sole, and a daily trainer is where that instinct meets actual runners rather than laboratories.
Use one: daily aerobic running, the four or five sessions a week that make up the bulk of any training block, where a shoe that behaves the same every time is worth more than one that feels exciting. Use two: steady tempo work, where the Zoom Air platform gives enough response to hold a faster rhythm without switching to a racing shoe. Fit true to size with a thumb of space at the toe, and use a running specific sock to avoid hot spots. Rotate with a second pair to let the foam recover between runs. Air dry after wet sessions, never in a machine, and replace when the midsole feels dead rather than when the tread looks worn.
Running is where Nike's credibility originates and where it keeps being tested. The company was founded in 1964 by a University of Oregon track coach and his former runner, its first track endorser was Steve Prefontaine, whose statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters, and its sponsored athletes have included Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. Almost none of the runners buying a Pegasus will ever race those distances, which is the point of the model. It is the shoe that carries the brand's actual relationship with running, week after week, far away from the finish line footage that sells everything else.
A daily trainer has to solve a harder problem than a racing shoe, because it has to work at every pace rather than one. That means a midsole tuned to feel reasonable on an easy jog and still hold shape when you push, and Nike Zoom Air, the pressurised gas cushioning it has used since making Air visible on the 1987 Air Max, is the platform doing that job here. The upper is engineered mesh, built to hold without pressure points across an hour of repetition. A graphic led pack colourway puts printed detail on the upper, and printed surfaces scuff more visibly than dyed ones, so clean gently with foam and a soft brush.
