Released on 3 July 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Lime Blast/Blue Lightning/Black. A mismatched pair breaks the oldest rule in footwear, that both shoes should agree with each other, and Nike is one of the few companies with enough authority to do it and be read as deliberate rather than defective. The Invincible 3 is the right shoe for the joke because it is otherwise entirely serious: a maximum cushioning daily trainer built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive Nike makes. Putting a design provocation on the most functional shoe in the range is a very Nike move, from a company whose engineering story starts with a coach ruining a waffle iron.
Two uses. One, daily training: easy kilometres, recovery days and long runs, with technical socks, laces snug at the midfoot and looser over the toes. Two, off duty: black joggers or wide trousers and a plain tee, where the mismatch reads as intentional styling rather than as running kit. Give yourself a thumbnail of toe room when sizing. Look after the foam: rotate with a second pair, do not machine wash, rinse cool with mild soap, remove insoles, stuff with paper and dry in shade, because heat and sunlight degrade ZoomX faster than the running itself. Log your mileage, because soft foam hides its own ageing well.
Nike has been leaning into design as artwork rather than as equipment for years: it acquired the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021 and worked with the artist Takashi Murakami on a Nike related digital work in 2022. A deliberately mismatched pair belongs to that same territory, where a shoe is asked to be an idea as well as a tool. It also draws on something older, the way Nike's silhouettes became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, which is what makes any visual rule breaking legible as a statement rather than as an error.
The build is unchanged by the colour idea: a tall volume of ZoomX for soft, high rebound cushioning across long and easy running, with an upper following Nike's Flywire logic of holding the foot using cables so less material is needed, and Dri-FIT for sweat management. What a mismatched make up does change is how you check wear. With two different looking shoes it is easy to stop noticing that one has aged differently, so inspect both outsoles and midsole creasing at the same intervals. Otherwise treat it as any tall stack trainer: stability comes from lacing and from your midfoot, not from the foam.
